Italy's capital

submits its candidacy to host Expo 2030

A unique and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to focus on mankind’s ability to reinvent their own ‘habitat’, the city, while simultaneously nurturing development and environmental sustainability. By the year 2050, metropolitan cities will be home to two thirds of the entire world population, which is why managing the relationship between people and their living environment will be one of the greatest challenges of our time. Rome aspires to be the center of this new urban model: inclusive, interconnected, sustainable and shared.

As the only European capital to submit its candidacy for Expo 2030, Rome has been waiting for this date with history since 1942. That year Rome was supposed to host the Universal Exposition and the business district of EUR (Esposizione Universale Roma) was built for that very reason. Unfortunately, the event was canceled due to World War II. Almost eighty years on, Rome is once again submitting its candidacy with a theme that one could claim is inscribed in its DNA: urban regeneration. In close to three thousand years of development, Rome has reinvented itself on numerous occasions over the centuries and has thus been dubbed the ‘eternal city’. Its origins, rooted in its unwavering drive towards evolution, art and integration between faiths and cultures, will now become the new departure point towards a more welcoming future and a higher quality of life.

Why should Rome host Expo 2030

There are many reasons why Rome is the perfect candidate.

The synergy with Jubilee 2025

Rome has the rare opportunity to be able to combine the possibility of hosting Expo 2030 with another unique world event: Jubilee 2025, for which preparations are already underway. An important window of opportunity for the city to work in synergy to execute the projects and develop the infrastructures required for both events and get ready to welcome millions of guests, optimizing costs and resources.

A greater focus on Italy’s South-Central area

Expo 2030 could promote the leadership of the territories and communities of Central and Southern Italy, thus attracting fresh capital and national as well as international investments. The two most recent Italian editions of this event were held in the north of the peninsula: Genoa in 1992 and Milan in 2015.

A date set in history

The Italian capital has never hosted a World Expo. It was scheduled to do so in 1942, and the EUR building was built as part of the preparations. But the event was cancelled due to the Second World War.

Eternal evolution

For centuries, Rome has been at the heart of Western philosophy and technology.

Thanks to its infrastructure, such as its roads, aqueducts and sewage system, designed for an increasingly connected and advanced society, Rome was able to raise living standards. Today, we strive to find a new urban paradigm, one that is far-reaching, interconnected and sustainable. A city in which the traditional divide between the city center and the suburbs is a thing of the past, where services are digital and green spaces are accessible and an integral part of the urban fabric. What better place to start than in the eternal city?

People and territories: Urban Regeneration, Inclusion and Innovation

The pandemic has enabled us to overcome the traditional idea of what a city represents, in favor of new spaces for creativity and social intercourse. A metropolis is now seen as an archipelago of local and global networks where productive and environmental systems, cultural identities, instruments of cooperation and inclusion are interwoven. It is a place for open dialogue to which global institutions are called upon to participate. In Rome, all participating countries can contribute to the creation of the urban coexistence model of the future.
